Dear Social Computing Students,

Hello! This message is from Owen James, your Sophomore English teacher. Welcome to Social Computing (SCICU) for Autumn 2008!

To help us make a really good start to the course, I would like everyone to do their best to do these three (3) quick things before class on Monday, please.

1. (10 mins) Register for the SCICU D.I.Y. Textbook:

1. Go to SCICU Homepage. Watch video, 'How to register for DIY Textbook' (look left under Course Links).

2) Go to your ICU email inbox. Look for the SCICU DIY Textbook invitation (This invitation may have already arrived. If not, it should arrive soon. Unfortunately, I do not have control over exactly when the site sends it.)

3) Complete your registration as explained in the video.

4) Great, you are done!

2. Buy a USB drive (if you do not have one already): You can pick up a USB drive at any electronics store. 128 MB is fine and the cheapest. However, as always with storage, more is better, you can never have enough. Please bring it to every class.

3. Bookmark the SCICU Homepage (http://ojames.blogspot.com/) on your home computer.

If you have any problems, please reply to this message. Do note that your message will go to everyone. I will answer you as soon as I can.

SCICU Information: Lesson 7 grades, etc.

Dear Social Computers,

Grades and comments have been left on your e-portfolios for Lesson 7. I also checked for any late submissions, there were just a couple.

There were also three (3) revisions of assignments that had already been submitted and graded. I noted this new work in my overall considerations of your final grade for the course, but please understand that a grading system that allows for open revision of work that was already graded would be unworkable, a course could never end.

Thank you for the feedback on the End of Semester Survey, it is useful for me in a number of ways.
Although, I do wish we could have talked more about ways to improve the course in other ways too.

SCICU Information: Lessons grades update

Dear SCICU class,

I have just caught up with grading, mostly Lessons 4, 5, and 6, but did go through each portfolio and graded a few late postings for Lesson 2 and 3 as well. You may access your grades as usual in the comments for each lesson post on your e-portfolio. I am sorry that I fell behind on grading, I need to do better.

A couple Lesson 6 posts were incomplete, missing the graph of survey results. Yet, I do know that those particular students did complete the graph in their spreadsheet. In this case, I am confused why it was not included in the post for Lesson 6.

Tomorrow may be our last class. However, I am looking forward to learning more about Zotero tomorrow, when you are teaching.
